How to Properly Conduct Sump
Pump Maintenance
A sump pump
can be a highly effective tool in ensuring the safety of the
home and its occupants. A sump pump will remove the
excess water and drain it away from the house leaving both the
basement and foundation safe and secure. The risk of
flooding will be greatly diminished so it is highly important
to have one. It will also prevent mold and mildew from
accumulating where the water is which can be a significant
health benefit to the family who lives in the house.
Sometimes, though a sump pump backup system is needed in case
there is an electrical outage. But, it can also be used
in case it is necessary to perform
sump pump
maintenance.
Most things
in the home need to undergo some maintenance at some time and a
sump pump is no exception. If you have a sump pump backup, this is
ideal because you can take your time with whatever sump pump
maintenance is necessary without being afraid the resulting
loss of power will flood the home. Regular sump pump
maintenance is recommended but how frequently it should occur
will vary from model to model. The manufacturer will have
instructions as to how often sump pump maintenance should occur
and it is important to adhere to those standards. At the
very least sump pump maintenance should occur annually.
Some recommend as often as every two months. Quarterly
sump pump maintenance seems to be the norm,
though.
Quarterly,
a vinegar solution can be run through the sump pump in order to
clean it. Much the same as when you clean a coffee pot
with vinegar and water, the sump pump will also become free
from tiny particles and debris and run much cleaner.
Whenever sump pump maintenance is accomplished there are
several basic tasks that should be done. This can all be
done by the homeowner and unless there is a serious problem a
professional sump pump maintenance person need not be
called.
During sump
pump maintenance the unit should be filled to ensure it is
working properly. You should also go outside to ensure it
is draining properly too. Check the float to be sure it
is not restricted in any way. If it is it will cause the
sump pump not to automatically go on in the case of a
flood. Clean all vents and air holes for maximum
effectiveness. If you have a sump pump backup, it is
recommended that sump pump maintenance occur every other year
and consist of all the same but with replacing the battery
also.
